Algebra (P6) Practice

Master algebraic expressions, simplification, substitution, and simple linear equations. Algebra in PSLE is limited in scope but heavily weighted β€” these questions reward careful, stepwise working.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

βœ—

Treating 'n' and '1n' as different (1n = n)

βœ—

Errors with negative signs when expanding brackets (e.g. βˆ’2(x βˆ’ 3) = βˆ’2x + 6, not βˆ’2x βˆ’ 6)

βœ—

Confusing 'find the value of' (substitute) with 'simplify' (collect like terms)

Practice Questions

Try each question. When you're stuck, reveal the Socratic strategy β€” a guided hint that teaches you how to think, not just what to write.

1

Find the value of 3x + 5 when x = 4.

2

Simplify: 4y + 7 βˆ’ 2y + 3.

3

A book costs $w and a pen costs $2. Express the total cost of 3 books and 5 pens in terms of w.

Parent & Tutor Insight

PSLE algebra questions usually start with 'Express ... in terms of n' or 'Find the value of ... when n = ...'. These are two distinct skills β€” practise both types, not just one.

Common Questions

How is P6 algebra different from Secondary algebra?

PSLE algebra uses only positive whole-number or simple fractional expressions. There are no quadratics (xΒ²), no simultaneous equations, and no inequalities. The focus is on forming and evaluating simple linear expressions. Secondary algebra picks up directly from here.

Can my child use the model method instead of algebra?

Yes β€” MOE accepts both model drawing and algebraic methods. However, for expressions like 'find 3n + 5 when n = 4', algebra is faster and cleaner. Encourage your child to try both and choose whichever gives fewer errors.

What does 'express in terms of n' mean?

It means write an expression using the variable n (instead of a number) to describe the quantity. For example, 'The cost of n packets at $3 each is $3n.' The answer has n in it β€” no numeric answer is expected.
